The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) in coordination with the NRC organized a ceremony on November 29, 2022, on the occasion of changing the language of instruction from Arabic to Kurdish in refugee camps in Duhok province.
The change includes the curriculum books and the education system, which were previously in Arabic, changed to Kurdish, the mother tongue, at the request of the camp residents, benefiting all students in the camps.
After the request of the residents of five refugee camps in Duhok province and the approval of the Duhok General Directorate of Education, the UN and DMCR, the education system from grade one to four of primary school was changed from Arabic to Kurdish. The change pleased the residents of the refugee camps, especially the students.
However, the change does not apply to IDP camps, most of which are of Arab ethnicity and study in their own language.
