The Statement of Mr. Masrour Barzani for the BCF’s Annual Report 2018:
Kurdish society is renowned for its generosity, its kindness, and its willingness to help others regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender.
The kindness of the Kurdistani peoples was embodied by the legendary Kurdish leader, Mustafa Barzani. My grandfather once said that “it is a privilege to serve one’s own people” and it is that philosophy that drives the work of the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF).
The BCF is trusted by its partners to act as a bridge between benefactors and those in need. Covering all humanitarian crises from man-made conflicts to natural disasters, BCF stands ready to provide essential assistance at short notice.
This past year, the BCF has worked tirelessly to support those affected by armed conflict in Syria and Iraq, providing assistance across eleven sectors, including food assistance, orphan care, education, health, disabled care, Non Food Items, shelter, livelihood and security.
ISIS attacks brought devastation to region. Thousands of children lost their fathers, women lost their husbands, and many lost their homes. The Kurdistan region responded with open arms. On the orders of President Masoud Barzani, the BCF and other authorities delivered immediate relief and assistance to the large numbers seeking help. The organisation will continue to provide aid to those currently housed in camps as well as working with all parties to help displaced people return home.
The BCF has of course not acted alone but in coordination with a range of humanitarian organisations that embrace the same ethos. We must also acknowledge the efforts of all our citizens, who have shown immense compassion to those in need.
By working together, we have shown what can be achieved through a collaborative approach to humanitarian crises. We urge the international community to adopt a similar approach and support the BCF with its crucial work.
As Head of the BCF’s Founding Board, I have been proud to witness the foundation’s tireless work in the cause of others. The 2018 Annual Report is testament to their efforts.
