Barzani Charity Foundation Provides Various Humanitarian Assistance During the Holy Month of Ramadan

The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), as part of its long-standing annual tradition of supporting communities during various religious occasions observed by the diverse components of Kurdistan, provides special humanitarian services. The holy month of Ramadan is one of the most significant religious occasions for Muslims, often regarded as a month of goodness, blessings, charity, and compassion toward those in need. With the support of generous donors, BCF implements a wide range of humanitarian projects and activities throughout this blessed month.

Every year during Ramadan, the Barzani Charity Foundation prepares iftar meals and hot food for people in need. This year, in the presence of Musa Ahmad, President of the Barzani Charity Foundation, and Omed Khoshnaw, the Governor of Erbil, a special project was launched at the beginning of Ramadan in coordination with the Galyawa Company Group. The project provides daily iftar meals for 1,000 people at Shar Park in Erbil, and it will continue until the end of the holy month.
Under the slogan “Cooperation and Brotherhood”, and within the framework of its Ramadan projects, BCF also launched a free bread distribution project for low-income families across Duhok Governorate. The project is implemented through 13 bakeries located in Duhok, Akre, Bardarash, Shekhan, and Amedi. This charitable campaign will continue for 15 days during Ramadan, benefiting more than 27,000 poor and low-income families.
In cooperation with the Aghsan Al-Karma Organization, the Barzani Charity Foundation opened a bakery in Mam Rashan Camp in Duhok Governorate. The bakery employs five workers and will produce 1,000 loaves of bread daily for six months, distributed free of charge to camp residents.
Despite the decline in international assistance for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in the Kurdistan Region, the Barzani Charity Foundation continues to intensify its efforts, working with partners and donors to provide broader humanitarian services and support.
In a joint initiative with the Emirates Red Crescent, BCF is also providing daily iftar meals for 750 people in Khazir Camp, within Erbil Governorate, starting from the beginning of Ramadan and continuing until the end of the month.
Similar humanitarian initiatives have also been carried out in Rojava Kurdistan. On 11 February 2026, during a press conference, Karzan Noori, a member of the Executive Board of the Barzani Charity Foundation, announced the launch of a new project in Qamishlo to provide fresh bread. In the first phase, seven tons of flour are baked daily in three government bakeries, while in the second phase bread production will expand to seven civil bakeries, with the bread distributed to the local population.
Thanks to the generosity and donations of the people of the Kurdistan Region and the commitment of donors, 200 tons of flour have been provided to bakeries in Qamishlo. This amount produces 480,000 bread bundles, equivalent to approximately 3,360,000 loaves of bread, which are distributed free of charge to residents of the city.
Orphans, who are cared for at the Mali Azizan operated by BCF, receive comprehensive support including educational services, financial assistance, food and non-food items, and healthcare. During Ramadan, they are also provided with new clothing in preparation for Eid. In this context, the BCF Duhok office organized a special and joyful activity for 100 orphans on 1 March 2026, ahead of the upcoming Eid celebration.
The event took place at Family Mall in Duhok, where the children were provided with new clothing and treated to a special lunch. Such activities not only strengthen the spirit of solidarity and social coexistence but also bring happiness to orphaned children during these blessed days.
Additionally, the BCF office in Duhok, with the support of a donor, provided new clothes for 30 orphans in preparation for Eid. Likewise, the Garmian Office of BCF, with support from donors, distributed
clothes and shoes to 47 orphans in Kalar on 1 March 2026, marking the 47th anniversary of the Eternal Barzani’s passing and preparing for the Eid celebration.
In Kalar, food baskets were distributed to visually impaired individuals, benefiting 114 families on 9 March 2026.
At Sharya Camp in Duhok Governorate, BCF, together with Shelter Now Organization, distributed food and non-food assistance to 163 widowed women on 2 March 2026. The aid included food baskets, rice, and blankets.
The Barzani Charity Foundation continues to implement humanitarian projects serving IDPs, refugees, and host communities. In this regard, it maintains active cooperation with organizations, institutions, and companies to provide diverse forms of assistance, especially at a time when aid from United Nations agencies has significantly decreased.
Nujin Project
The Nujin Project, which is implemented annually during Ramadan, is one of BCF’s most important initiatives. Since 2021, the project has benefited 64 families, including 12 families in 2026. The project has created fundamental and lasting improvements in the lives of beneficiary families. BCF intends to continue expanding the project beyond Ramadan so that more families in need can benefit.
Food Basket Distribution
Food basket distribution remains a major component of BCF’s humanitarian work, particularly during Ramadan, and is carried out across different cities and districts.
Within the framework of Ramadan projects:
On 2 March 2026, the BCF Garmian Office distributed food baskets to 130 poor and low-income families in Kifri District.
On 3 March 2026, 150 families in Khanaqin received food baskets.
On 4 March 2026, in coordination with the Directorate of Martyrs and Anfal Victims in Erbil, food baskets and cartons of products from ZOM Company were distributed to the families of martyrs.
In Hasan Sham U3 Camp in Erbil Governorate, and in cooperation with Shu’aa Al-Amal Organization, BCF cleared the market debts of 20 families on 25 February 2026.
During Ramadan, the BCF Duhok Office also provided assistance to the Elderly Care Home in Duhok, including mattresses, blankets, pillows, hygiene supplies, and essential items for elderly residents. The home currently accommodates 25 elderly individuals, including 13 women and 12 men. Supporting the elderly and people with special needs remains a constant priority for the Barzani Charity Foundation.
Assistance in Rojava Kurdistan
During Ramadan in Rojava Kurdistan, various humanitarian services were also provided.
1,200 iftar meals were distributed to people residing in schools in Qamishlo.
Hot meals were provided to 420 displaced persons in schools and mosques in Derik.
BCF teams distributed food baskets to 1,240 families in Newroz Camp in Derik.
On the first day of Ramadan (18 February 2026), 955 families in Qamishlo received different forms of assistance.
With an advanced plan, experienced teams, and a strong logistics system, BCF managed to cross borders in less than 24 hours, delivering one of the most significant humanitarian relief operations from the Kurdistan Region to Rojava Kurdistan. To date, 433 large aid trucks have been delivered, 394,475 liters of fuel distributed, over one million loaves of bread provided, 9,335 people received medical treatment, and 1,858 job opportunities were created.
Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, the Barzani Charity Foundation continues its humanitarian efforts, providing assistance both within the Kurdistan Region and beyond its borders, reaffirming its commitment to supporting those in need.
