The population of Basra Province are facing a severe humanitarian condition due to shortages of drinking water in the province.

Over 17,000 patients have been admitted for diarrhoea, stomach pains and vomiting, according to Ryad Abdul Amir, head of Basra’s health department.
An increase in water salinity and the decline of chlorine concentration as well as a drop in the rainfall have led to the crisis, according to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
The rising salinity has shut down water purification systems in the province, resulting in the drinking water woe for the residents.
