The Orphans’ and Widows’ department is one of the main departments of Barzani Charity Foundation. It started its services in 2012 within a conference in the presence of the Chairman of the Founding Board of Barzani Charity Foundation, His Excellency Mr. Masrour Barzani. The priority of this department is to provide services in all areas (cash, educational, health and welfare) for all classes (orphans, widows, low-income families, people with disabilities, and… etc.).
Barzani Charity Foundation has launched a project to serve orphans and widows with the support of local and foreign donors. The number of beneficiaries has increased year by year, in 12/7/2023 the number of beneficiaries has reached 13,202. In which 7,130 orphans have been registered, and 1,103 orphans are waiting. 3,384 orphans receive salaries from the Kurdistan Project. 48 orphans have been secured in the Polish project. Saudi Arabia provided cash assistance to 1,000 orphans and Kuwait to 4,000 orphans, only once in 2017. 4,000 orphans of martyrs who participated in conflicts against ISIS are registered and receive salaries.
In addition, the Orphans’ and Widows’ department of the Barzani Charity Foundation, with the help of donors, provided school supplies for the orphans, awarded the top and successful students, bought new clothes for the orphans during the Eid and distributed sacrificial meat to their families. In the health sector, 15 orphans underwent major surgeries in just one year, each costing more than $10,000.
Helping orphans has a glorious history in Kurdish society, to the extent that it has become part of Kurdish culture, therefore they have always extended a helping hand to the victims, the poor and those who needed help.
Those who are in poor living conditions and suffer from their way of living, Kurdistan Charitable people have always tried their best to help them, but the assistance and donations were not collected in a special institution or organization, so sometimes these assistances are not properly placed. Therefore, the establishment of the Barzani Charity Foundation and the opening of the Orphans’ and Widows’ department was a historical necessity.
